01
Adjustment Techniques
Each patient is different in what works best for them. Some of the common techniques I utilize are Diversified, Activator, Thompson & Gonstead. Mostly, I use a combination suitable to the patient for optimum results.
02
Spinal Mobilization
Massage of the soft tissues improves circulation, reduces swelling and inflammation, & encourages quicker healing. To restore or to enhance joint function, I perform intentional movements, usually to a firm endpoint of joint motion to mobilize the joint.
03
Moist heat & cold therapy
Moist heat is used in chronic conditions to increase circulation, which reduces pain, spasms & stiffness. It also prevents the build up of lactic acid in muscles, which can cause pain. Cold therapy is mostly used for acute sprains & strains.
04
Pregnancy & Pediatric Chiropractic
Chiropractic care is critical for you to function at your highest peak. Whether you're 5 years old or 55, it is important at every stage along your journey. I am intentional with my touch and technique when treating pregnant patients or children. These are two unique and critical stages where non-invasive intervention is essential for optimal development and growth.
05
Instruments Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
This works like a standard massage, but specialized instruments are used in place of my hands. These instruments allow more direct treatment of the soft tissues involved with movement. Benefits include faster pain relief, improved mobility, quicker rehab and recovery.
06
MyoFascial Disruption Technique
(MFDT)
Used in combination with adjustments, this approach to treating soft tissue injuries like sprained ankles, golf & tennis elbow quickly reduces recovery time. Soft tissue injuries are a result of a separation or a disruption of the fascia. Great for weekend athletes and professionals, alike.
07
Dry Needling
I refer to this as my "magic formula" and it's largely what I'm known for coupling with chiropractic adjustments. This works like a standard massage, but specialized instruments are used in place of my hands. These instruments allow more direct treatment of the soft tissues involved with movement. Benefits include faster pain relief, improved mobility, quicker rehab and recovery.
When You Feel Sick
People will say, "Oh, I can't come in today, I'm sick." I tell them that they need to come in because a spinal adjustment will help the nervous system to boost their immune system and fight off their cold. I adjust the spine to allow the nervous system to function as it should.
If You Have Acne
When your spine is misaligned, your nervous system function is disrupted, and it is difficult for your body to manage its cortisol & androgen production. Your skin can thus become inflamed. Adrenal glands controlled by nerves running through the thoracic spine are affected. Adjustment of the thoracic spine will help to improve adrenal function.
When You Feel Anxious
A misalignment or blockage somewhere in the central nervous system (CNS) can cause anxiety. Adjustments can ease a spinal misalignment or subluxation back into proper alignment & restore natural communication within the CNS and endocrine system. As a result, the blockage that may have been responsible for feelings of anxiety can no longer hinder hormonal signals.
If You Have Bad Gut Health
Your nervous system controls every part of your body, including your gastrointestinal system. Nerves carry messages from one part of the body to another and play an essential role in digestion. Subluxations can cause the organs to malfunction, resulting in heartburn, gas, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, etc. Spinal adjustments help the nervous system to help the digestive system function as it should.
Did You Know?
The human spine consists of 33 vertebrae, enabling your body to bend, twist, and stay upright. Chiropractic adjustments directly impact your central nervous system, the master control system of your entire body, which runs through your spine at every notch and level. This system regulates all bodily functions, including your immune, digestive, and endocrine (hormonal) systems.
When you strain your neck or back, your first instinct is likely to call your chiropractor—this is the primary reason most of our patients visit our office. However, it’s fascinating to see how many new patients are surprised to learn that their spinal health can significantly influence their overall well-being.
There’s a good chance that you’re experiencing a health condition that could be alleviated with proper chiropractic care. Since chiropractors treat the central nervous system, there are many instances where chiropractic care can benefit you. Here are four that may surprise you.
Meet Dr. Marie Ouellette
The face behind your exceptional care
I am committed to providing relief from pain and a full recovery without the unnecessary use of pharmaceuticals. My goal is to restore the highest quality of life by utilizing the body's natural restorative abilities.
Hi, I'm Marie, and I'm glad you're here. As a chiropractor, I believe it's important that we get to know each other to provide you with the best possible care. If you're interested, please take a moment to learn more about me and how The Old Village Chiropractic came to be.
In 1990, I started college to become a physical therapist. A few months in, I suffered severe whiplash from a car accident. The pain and headaches were overwhelming, and my neck would randomly spasm. I was terrified that this injury would end my active lifestyle.
I saw several doctors, all of whom prescribed pain medication. I knew there had to be a better solution. In my search for relief without medication, I discovered chiropractic care. Chiropractic addresses the root cause of the problem, allowing the body to heal and strengthen. Pain is a symptom; we need to treat the root of the dysfunction.
There's a quote I love: “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree." Just as a tree adapts and continues to grow despite being bent, the human body is resilient. However, if we don't address the root problems, our symptoms and conditions will worsen.
Chiropractic care helped me recover, and I changed my major to chiropractic. My entire trajectory changed. Physical therapy and medication felt like temporary fixes, while chiropractic offered a deeper solution.
I began my career in Winthrop and Skowhegan, Maine, in 1998, working at a decades-old chiropractic practice in a Victorian home. With no signage or branding, patients came strictly by word of mouth. I treated generations of families, and some treatment cards dated back to $5 adjustments.
In 2018, I slipped on a treadmill and sprained my ankle. Wearing an orthopedic boot for too long caused my spine to overcompensate, leading to excruciating back and leg pain. The doctors I saw only offered pain relief, not solutions. I found myself walking with a cane at 46.
Desperate for help, a colleague referred me to a pain specialist and chiropractor that was located over 30 miles away. I also received platelet-rich plasma injections and dry needling, spending $400/week out of pocket. This combination helped, but I realized the need for a quality chiropractor in the immediate Mount Pleasant area.
I decided to be that change. People need access to good quality, affordable chiropractic care.
Now, I run The Old Village Chiropractic out of a lovely 1945 cottage, just two blocks off Coleman Blvd at the intersection of Chuck Dawley Blvd. and Ben Sawyer Blvd. I chose this location to decrease my carbon footprint and keep costs affordable for my patients. I pride myself on being patient-focused, not profit-centered.
I use scientifically proven methods to aid the body in restoring health. My goal is to help your body achieve homeostasis and wellness. I want you to be free of pain and functioning at your highest potential. I believe in the power of nutrition and balance. I want you better and stronger.
I've been where you are. I took control of my physical health and got well. I can show you the way too.
Come see me today, your neighborhood chiropractor.
